Judge Jay Severin showing empathy?

“Clark Rockefeller” was convicted today of kidnapping his daughter. In a live interview with WTKK’s Michele McPhee, Jay repeatedly played “devil’s advocate” and wondered whether many sane men, if faced with the loss of a child, might attempt a similar abduction. Jay was careful not to say that he thought parental kidnapping could ever be justified, but his comments certainly left the impression that when considering a party’s guilt and/or sentencing, a judge or juror might reasonably ask what he or she would do under similar circumstances. Now if both the judge and the accused had been Latina women, and the judge had made the slightest utterance about how she could relate to or sympathize with the defendant, can you imagine the slamming that Jay would have unleashed?

Jay Severin’s manners may have improved, but not his logic

In discussing Judge Sotomayor yesterday, Jay noted that the judge had said something to the effect of “I am an affirmative action baby. My test scores were not good enough to get me into the Ivy League schools I attended because the tests were culturally biased.” Jay then asked what would happen if a radio announcer or some other white male had said “I bet Sotomayor’s test scores weren’t very good and that she only got into those Ivy League schools because of affirmative action.” Jay perceived a double-standard. He imagined that the commentator would get excoriated for his remarks whereas the judge’s own remarks would be met with a positive reaction (if any) from the left.

Jay, do you really not see the difference between a personal account of one’s own experience and the assumptions made by an outsider about events not personally known to them? The former is an expression of fact, whereas the latter is an expression of prejudice: “the judge is Hispanic/female; therefore it is reasonable to assume that she had poor test scores.”

Had a white male commentator said “I have a copy of Sotomayor’s school applications and they clearly indicate that her test scores were well below those of her fellow classmates,” no one would have accused the commentator of prejudice or bias.

Who is this guy impersonating Jay Severin?

I don’t understand. In the 4:00 hour today, Jay talked about drunk driving. While his views are extreme (he recommends capital punishment for repeat offenders), I didn’t hear him saying anything insulting or illogical.

Then in his 5:00 monologue he is astonished and confused by the Supreme Court decision on the recusal of elected judges. The justices whose opinion he can’t understand: Roberts, Scalia, Thomas, and Alito.

Watch for flying pigs ….

Has Jay Severin found his mind?

Is it possible that a little R&R actually did Jay Severin some good? This is the man, you may recall, who belittled “ho-ho-homosexual marriage” by saying that a man could no more marry a man than he could marry a penguin. This is the man who, in an attempt to ridicule two callers named Dave and Jerry, joked that they had invented an ice cream flavor called “Chocolate Fudge Packer Pal.” And yet when I tuned in during the 6:00 hour of yesterday’s show, I heard Jay giving a vigorous argument against “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” on the grounds that everyone should be given an equal opportunity to serve in the military. Moreover, he was disagreeing with a woman who is currently serving! (“Thank you.”)

It’s as if Jay woke up and said “hey, wait a minute … my philosophy is libertarianism, not being a reactionary, conservative, power-to-the-powerful-white-male prick.”

It was probably just a fluke, but it was a pleasant surprise.

Roster of online Jay Severin critics is growing

Looks like this idea of publicly calling out Jay Severin’s errors and omissions may be catching on. Yesterday Scott Lehigh called for reports of Severin’s incivility. Then Dan Kennedy responded with an example of what in my mind is a much greater sin: misleading his audience.

A caller ripped the media for hounding poor Sarah Palin while letting Sonia Sotomayor get away with not giving interviews. At least Palin answered questions, the caller said. How can the media let Sotomayor get away with not giving interviews? (I’m paraphrasing from memory, but that was the gist.)

"Great point," Severin responded, without bothering to point out that Supreme Court nominees, by longstanding custom, are not allowed to grant interviews. As Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said yesterday, he wants to begin hearings sooner rather than later so that Sotomayor can finally be heard.

Severin had to know better. By not only not correcting the caller’s error, but by amplifying it and giving him an "attaboy," I’d say that qualifies as an error. So put it on your list, Scot.

At one point I’d hoped that SeverinWatch would be the definitive source for Severin criticism, but I’m happy to see others jumping on the bandwagon. It’s vital to get Severin’s on-air statements transcribed and posted contemporaneously; otherwise, it’s far too easy for him to deflect criticism with a simple “that’s not what I said.”

Jay Severin is back, and Scott Lehigh is watching

A couple items from today’s Boston Globe:

I’m afraid I don’t have time to comment right now (I’m not getting paid to do this, you know) but I did want to go on record to point out that SeverinWatch was here before Jay Watch. And I want to note that the two endeavors have very different agendas. Lehigh is more concerned about Severin’s tone and seems to think that checking Severin’s facts is a lost cause. I am much less concerned about derogatory language and much more worried about distortion of the truth.

We’ve all heard the saying about “sticks and stones,” and I think that applies here. Jay is unlikely to sway public opinion through name-calling alone. It’s the combination of name-calling and lies that is truly dangerous.

How will Jay Severin live?

There is a lot of speculation that Jay’s return to the airwaves will be accompanied by a pay cut. If that’s true, I wonder if we’ll be seeing his house on the market soon. After all, Jay swore to us last year that he lives “pretty much paycheck to paycheck.” That would imply that a pay cut would seriously impede his ability to keep up with his mortgage payments. Of course, I think he was lying about living paycheck to paycheck. If the reports about his pay cut are confirmed, I hope to get the chance to ask him about this sometime.

Jay Severin thanks us; he still has a job

People on WTKK’s e-mail list received the following e-mail on Saturday, May 30:

On Tuesday June 2nd, at 3 p.m., Jay Severin will return to the weekday afternoon timeslot on Boston’s Talk Evolution 96.9 FM-WTKK.   Jay regrets the remarks for which he was suspended and understands that his comments were indeed wrong and hurtful to the Mexican and Mexican-American communities.  Accordingly, we feel it is time to end Jay’s suspension and welcome him back to WTKK. All of our hosts have strong opinions and talk radio is a format for open and spirited debate about the many issues we face in Boston, New England, our nation and our world. There will no doubt be times when you disagree with Jay – and our other hosts too – but our ultimate goal is to maintain a level of conversation that is entertaining, compelling, and thought-provoking, yet civil and respectful. While we will no t always succeed in walking this line, we will continually strive to do so.

We hope you’ll experience what Jay has to say this Tuesday and every weekday from 3 to 7 p.m.

It will be interesting to see which bends first, Jay’s SOP or WTKK’s definition of “civil and respectful.”

Jay Severin, new and improved?

Check out this interesting report from WGBH’s Beat the Press and subsequent comment by News Platoon. A less sarcastic and hyperbolic Jay Severin? Hard to imagine. And hard to take seriously, since Severin repeatedly professed absolute belief in the radical views he has offered.

Severin has often expressed admiration for Mitt Romney. Will Severin now be forced to take Romney’s approach of saying whatever is necessary to win more fans? If he changes his rhetoric, will Severin say the “new Jay” is what he has really been like all along and that he had been goaded by WTKK to go over the top? Or will he claimed to have found religion in moderation during his extended “time out?”

I can’t wait for the next episode.

Jay Severin misinforms and miseducates

That’s what Salem News columnist Brian Watson thinks, and I agree with this characterization. However, I don’t agree with Watson that Jay’s suspension should be permanent because “he is insulting, disrespectful and inflammatory.” Jay may be all of those things, but those things alone don’t disqualify someone from the job of talk radio host; indeed, they may be prerequisites. The distortions and outright lies have no place on the air, though.
